RESPOND is a practical one-day training programme designed to equip line managers, supervisors and team leaders with the confidence and skills to recognise when someone may be struggling and respond appropriately.
Through interactive learning, case studies and realistic workplace scenarios, managers develop the confidence to handle sensitive conversations and support colleagues in a constructive and professional way.
Course Content
- Understanding mental health and common workplace pressures
- Recognising signs that someone may be struggling
- Reducing stigma and improving mental health conversations
- Applying the RESPOND model in real situations
- Understanding boundaries and when to seek additional support
- Promoting psychologically safe teams
RESPOND combines mental health awareness with practical management skills.
The course is highly interactive and encourages open discussion, reflection and practical learning.
Why Manager Training Matters
Research consistently shows that managers have a significant influence on employee wellbeing.
When managers feel uncertain about how to respond to mental health concerns, issues may go unnoticed, conversations may be avoided, or support may be delayed.
RESPOND helps organisations build leadership capability by giving managers the tools to:
- Recognise when someone may be experiencing difficulties
- Start supportive conversations with confidence
- Respond in a calm, structured and professional way
- Understand their role, boundaries and responsibilities
- Signpost colleagues to appropriate support
By strengthening manager capability, organisations create safer, healthier and more supportive working environments.
The RESPOND Framework
At the heart of the course is the RESPOND model — a clear, practical framework that helps managers structure conversations when a team member may be struggling.
The model provides a simple step-by-step approach that managers can apply confidently in real workplace situations.
Participants practise using the model through discussion, exercises and case studies so they leave the course feeling prepared to apply what they have learned.
Respond Companion – Ongoing Manager Support
All participants receive access to the Respond Companion, an online resource designed to support managers after the training.
The platform allows managers to revisit key concepts and access:
- Short learning videos and guidance
- Practical tools and resources
- Examples of common workplace scenarios
- Curated articles and external resources
This ongoing support helps managers continue building their confidence when supporting members of their team.
